Title: Hierarchical Spline Approximation of the Signed Distance Function and Applications to Trimmed
Offsets and Medial Axis Computation

Abstract: We present a method to approximate the signed distance function of a
smooth curve or surface by using a PHT-spline hierarchical approximation. In
particular, we focus on closed parametric curves in the plane and
implicitly defined surfaces in space. We also describe two
applications of this approximation: the computation of the medial axis
and of trimmed offset surfaces. A mesh of the medial axis of the given
boundary is obtained by applying suitable thinning and smoothing
algorithms to the deepest level of the hierarchical T-mesh; the
trimmed offsets of the given boundary are also easily obtained from
the approximation.
