Language :

English is the official language of the summer school.

Objectives :

The principal objective of this school is to introduce the state of the art in computer vision and robotics to last year engineering, master and PhD students. The courses include  general and fundamental knowledge for robot control and  perception systems design. This includes  scene identification and modeling, robot localization, pattern recognition, trajectory planning and execution and robot physical interactions. The formation will be articulated along four principal themes

  • Perception : image processing and computer vision.
  • Algorithmics : movement generation and control.
  • Mobile robotics.
  • Learning  and  Bayesian methods.
The organization of this school has to be seen in the framework of total cooperation between mexican and french research in computer science as expressed through the creation of the Mixed French-Mexican Laboratory in Computer Science (LAFMI) .

The Image & Robotique cooperation network was set up following the French-Mexican workshop of Computer Sciences and Automatics (JFMIA' 99) which took place at Xalapa in Mexico in March 1999. Since those days, research subjects, mechanisms, and means of cooperation were identified, and  some projects were launched. LAFMI is the result of a long tradition of cooperation in the fields of  Computer Science, Communication and Information Technologies. Its official creation dates back to January 24th 2002, in Paris.

Indeed, approximately 40% of the Mexican Computer Science PhD's  have obtained their degree in France and there is a strong bilateral cooperation in these highly strategic fields to build the  Information Society of  tomorrow. There is also a significant research potential constituted by students and/or Mexican teachers applying for a DEA, a PhD or a Post-Doc in Computer Science in France.

The main goal of this tematic network is to promove and increase the French-Mexican cooperation into the domain of the imaging and robotics, in order to cover the scientifics, academic and industrial aspects. This school last for 2 weeks, it consists of about 60 hrs. of theoric courses and practical workshops. The participation in the school have been around 60 students average for each edition (3 editions total). So far, 189 students have been participated. They come from more than 30 institutions, mainly from Mexico and France but also from another countries like Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Colombia and Venezuela. A total of 25 professors have participated in previews editions of this school. Until now, it have been 3 editions of the Summer School on Image and Robotics: the first one in France, at the INRIA Rhone-Alpes (2000), the second one in Mexico, at the ITESM Campus Cuernavaca, Morelos (2001) the third one at the LAAS, in Toulouse, France(2002) and the fourth one at the University of the Américas-Puebla   (2003). This year the school will be organized at INRIA in Sophia Antipolis, France, from June 14th to 25th, 2004.

The  school is made of general lectures and talks on more specialized areas making it possible to concretely cover both research and practical subjects.
