Practical Information for members of SAB

2 Annual meeting in Dublin

Location, Directions, and Transportation

The 2nd Annual Mobius Meeting is taking place in the School of Computer Science and Informatics (or CSI for short) at University College Dublin (UCD).

UCD's main campus (called "Belfield") is located about 3 miles south of Dublin City Center. CSI's buildings are located on this campus.

Address:

   Computer Science and Informatics Center
   University College Dublin
   Belfield, Dublin 4
   Ireland

Dublin and Ireland

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland. Ireland is part of the European Union and the Euro is the currency used. Sterling is grudgingly accepted at Dublin banks and some stores near the border of Northern Ireland.

More information on Dublin and its attractions is found at:

These sites also have special discounts for hotels and similar, as does most airline websites, particularly Aer Lingus.

Dublin Airport

Dublin is served by a single airport, Dublin Airport, whose airport code is "DUB". While Dublin Airport is the main airport of Ireland and of the capital, it is a fairly small, simple airport.

The main "low-cost" carriers that travel to/from Dublin Airport are Ryan Air (mainly to/from continental Europe) and FlyBe (mainly to/from the UK). The "national carrier" is Aer Lingus. (Ed note: I always fly Aer Lingus as their service is, IMO, superior and they have excellent coverage to/from continental Europe.)

Dublin Public Transportation

The best way to travel in Dublin is by city bus or taxi; Dublin has no subway. Dublin's several different modes of public transport (bus, tram, and train) are owned and operated by different companies, tickets do not transfer between services, nor do many of the services actually connect to each other physically.

Transportation between Dublin Airport and Dublin City Center

Three options exist to travel to/from the Airport:

  • Take a taxi from the airport taxi rank (just outside the main entrance). For approximately 25 euro you will be taken to the city center in about 25 minutes (on a good day).
  • Take an express bus called the "Airlink".
  • Take a standard city bus. The 746, 747, 748, and 16A all go to the city center.

If you arrive/depart at a time anywhere near that of Dublin's "rush hours" (i.e., between 7-10 and 15-19) your trip will be significantly longer and, if in a taxi, correspondingly more costly. (Ed note: I try to arrange flights outside of these time windows.)

Dublin Bus

The city bus network is run by Dublin Bus.

Dublin has a decent enough (to use the Irish expression) bus system (it provides adequate coverage and and relatively reliable). Automobile driving in Ireland, or at least in Dublin, should be avoided by non-locals at all costs (see below).

Many buses travel to/from campus very regularly, as UCD is the busiest bus terminus in the whole country. The primary bus lines that one should use are the 46, 10, and 11.

Bus fares are tier and you must pay in exact change. If you overpay, you are issues a receipt which records the excess value. That receipt can be returned to the main Dublin Bus office for a refund. A ticket purchased in this manner is only good for the bus on which you bought the ticket; i.e., they are non-transferable.

"Travel 90" tickets are also available. They permit you to travel on an Dublin Buses for 90 minutes, with changes. We plan on issuing a set of Travel 90 tickets to all participants for your convenience.

Normal buses only run until just after 23:00. After that time ,only a very limited "Nite Link" bus service is available. Buses with an appended 'N' on their number are Nite Link buses (e.g., "46N"). Nite Link buses are more expensive than daytime buses, run very infrequently, and are usually full of intoxicated young people. (Ed note: I suggest you avoid Nite Link buses and always use taxis.)

"Expresso" buses are pseudo-express buses that run along normal routes but stop at fewer locations and are meant to transport riders more rapidly than normal buses to their destinations. (Ed note: It is unclear if this intention is fulfilled.) Buses with an appended 'X' on their number are Expresso buses (e.g., "46X"). Express buses cost more (usually about 2 euro) and, depending upon the driver, one may be able to use a "Travel 90" ticket on them (it seems that this is open to interpretation). (Ed note: We suggest simply avoiding espresso buses.)

Dublin Taxis

Taxis are the main mode of convenient transportation in Dublin. There are taxi ranks all over the city center and one can flag down any free taxi (with a lit sign) at any safe location on the road. Taxis cost at least ~4 euro and, in general, to get across town, around 10-12 euro. You must pay taxis in cash and all taxis will give you a receipt, usually printed automatically, but sometimes hand-written.

The Luas

The Luas is a relatively new (2 years old) light rail system. There are two rails, one in North Dublin and one in South Dublin. Unfortunately, the two rails do not meet, nor do they go anywhere that Mobius participants will likely want to travel (e.g., UCD). One pays for the Luas prior to boarding at automated ticket dispenser machines; the amount one pays depends upon the distance one wishes to travel.

Irish Rail and the DART

The national rail network and train system is run by Irish Rail. Using the train one can travel to nearly all of the medium-sized towns and half dozen major cities of Ireland. The train is fairly reliable, relatively-but-not-enormously expensive, but a bit slow and low-service/tech.

The [[http://www.iarnrodeireann.ie/dart/home/][DART] is the commuter rail train that runs north and south from the city center to outlying towns. It is a convenient mode of transportation for those that live along the coast and work in the city center. If you wish to travel up/down the coast, again, avoiding commuting times and directions, it is a convenient, quick mode of transportation.

Accommodations Recommended

We suggest that Mobius participants stay in a City Center hotel so as to best take advantage of all the Dublin has to offer in the evenings. Hotels in Dublin range enormously in cost and quality. The cheapest accommodation one can find is a hostel at perhaps 30 euro/night, a typical city center hotel will cost over 100 euro/night, and a 4/5-star hotel will run several hundred euro.

The high-end-ish hotels are the Fitzwilliam, the Shelbourne, and the Merrion, which are all close to St Stephen's Green. There are several quality hotels near Grafton Street, the main shopping street in south Dublin, as well (e.g., the Central hotel and the Trinity Lodge Hotel). Finally, some of the hotels near Temple Bar can be even less expensive (like the Temple Bar, Paramount, and Drury Court hotels), but represent about a 20 minute walk to the bus. Temple Bar is vibrant and interesting (i.e., noisy and busy in the evening).

This map references nearly all major city center hotels. The Dublin City Centre Hotels website provides a good overview of the choices of city center Dublin. We will try to make some more concrete suggestions for hotel choices in the coming weeks.

If you do wish to stay in a hotel within walking distance of the meeting site, then there is one hotel across the street from the main campus entrance. It is called the Jurys Montrose Hotel. Here are some (very mixed) reviews: Ireland Guide, Trip Advisor. (Ed note: We have a pint at the hotel on Friday afternoons, but I would not really choose to stay there. It is not horrible, just sort of "eh".)
