Sorry, i've a question about your question!?  Why do you think such a function
exists?!  If one looks in the Centaur-1.2 documentation, Volume 3 (The Core),
"The Ctedit Editor", you see the primitives for working with the ctedit and 
this function is not offered.

Why do you want to change the existing variable in a ctedit?!  i can understand
wanting to change the tree displayed but the variable?!
