Classification of the 3 by 3 binary configurations using symetry black/white and rotations by a PI/2 multiple :

We have 51 classes conresponding to 50 parameters C(i) (the uniform configuration potential is set to 0 : C(0) = 0)

We define edges constraints. The energy of an elementary length edge is set to e . We get linear equation between the configuration parameters:

Objects of 2 pixels and 3 pixels width lead to 6 other equations.

We use the same approach to define the energy associated with elementary length line ( l ) :

Solving the derived linear system of equation leads to define some of the 50 parameters as a linear combination of the 2 parameters : e and l . Other parameters correspond to noise configurations and are set to n .

The Chien model depends on 3 parameters : e, l and n

The binary model is extented to an m-ary model by adding the potential values in the following way :
