Léo SCHELSTRAETE Rewriting theory in higher algebra and quantum topology

Higher algebras, and specifically diagrammatic ones, are prominent in representation theory and its application to topology. Unfortunately, their 2-dimensional flavor often makes it hard to answer the most basic question: what is an explicit basis for the given algebra? Recently, rewriting theory has emerged as a promising tool to answer this question, and others. In a nutshell, rewriting theory is the algorithmic study of presentations of algebraic structures: classical examples include the word problem for groups, or Gröbner bases for polynomial ideals.
