Abstract :
Confocal microscopy is an increasingly popular technique for 3D
imaging of biological specimens which gives images with a very good resolution
(several tenths of micrometers), even though degraded by both blur and Poisson
noise. Deconvolution methods have been proposed to reduce these degradations,
some of them being regularized on a Total Variation prior, which gives
good results in image restoration but does not allow to retrieve the thin details
(including the textures) of the specimens. We rst propose here to use instead
a wavelet prior based on the Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet transform to retrieve
the thin details of the object. As the regularizing prior e ciency also depends
on the choice of its regularizing parameter, we secondly propose a method to
select the regularizing parameter following a discrepancy principle for Poisson
noise. Finally, in order to implement the proposed deconvolution method, we
introduce an algorithm based on the Alternating Direction technique which allows
to avoid inherent stability problems of the Richardson-Lucy multiplicative
algorithm which is widely used in 3D image restoration. We show some results
on real and synthetic data, and compare these results to the ones obtained with
the Total Variation and the Curvelets priors. We also give preliminary results
on a modi cation of the wavelet transform allowing to deal with the anisotropic
sampling of 3D confocal images. |

Résumé :
Dans ce rapport de recherche, nous rappelons brièvement comment la nature limitée de diffraction de l'objectif d'un microscope optique, et le bruit
intrinsèque peuvent affecter la résolution d'une image observée. Un algorithme de déconvolution aveugle a été proposé en vue de restaurer les fréquences manquants au delà de la limite de diffraction. Cependant, sous d'autres conditions, l'approximation du systéme imageur l'imagerie sans aberration n'est plus valide et donc les aberrations de la phase du front d'onde émergeant d'un médium ne sont plus ignorées. Dans la deuxième partie de
ce rapport de recherche, nous montrons que la distribution d'intensité originelle et la localisation d'un objet peuvent être retrouvées uniquement en obtenant de la phase du front d'onde
réfracté, à partir d'images d'intensité observées. Nous démontrons cela par obtention de la fonction de ou a partir d'une microsphère imagée. Le bruit et l'infl uence de la taille de la
microsphère peuvent être diminués et parfois complètement supprimes des images observées en utilisant un estimateur maximum a posteriori. Néanmoins, a cause de l'incohérence du système d'acquisition, une récupération de phase a partir d'intensités observées n'est possible que si la restauration de la phase est contrainte. Nous avons utilisé l'optique géométrique
pour modéliser la phase du front d'onde réfracté, et nous avons teste l'algorithme sur des images simulées. |
Abstract :
In this research report, we recall briefly how the diffraction-limited nature of an optical microscope's objective, and the intrinsic noise can affect the observed images' resolution. A blind deconvolution algorithm can restore the lost frequencies beyond the diffraction limit. However, under other imaging conditions, the approximation of aberration-free imaging, is not applicable, and the phase aberrations of the emerging wavefront from a specimen immersion medium cannot be ignored any more. We show that an object's location and its original intensity distribution can be recovered by retrieving the refracted wavefront's phase from the observed intensity images. We demonstrate this by retrieving the point-spread function from an imaged microsphere. The noise and the influence of the microsphere size can be mitigated and sometimes completely removed from the observed images by using a maximum a posteriori estimate. However, due to the incoherent nature of the acquisition system, phase retrieval from the observed intensities will be possible only if the phase is constrained. We have used geometrical optics to model the phase of the refracted wavefront, and tested the algorithm on some simulated images. |

Résumé :
Nous proposons une méthode de restauration itérative d’images de fluorescence
CLSM et d’estimation paramétrique de la fonction de flou (PSF) du système d’acquisition.
Le CLSM est un microscope qui balaye un échantillon en 3D et utilise une sténopée pour
rejeter la lumière en dehors du point de focalisation. Néanmoins, la qualité des images
souffre de deux limitations physiques. La première est due à la diffraction due au système
optique et la seconde est due à la quantité réduite de lumière détectée par le tube
photo-multiplicateur (PMT). Ces limitations induisent respectivement un flou et du bruit
de comptage de photons. Les images peuvent alors bénéficier d’un post-traitement de
restauration fondé sur la déconvolution. Le problème à traiter est l’estimation simultanée
de la distribution 3D de l’échantillon des sources fluorescentes et de la PSF du microscope
(i.e. de déconvolution aveugle). En utilisant un modèle de processus physique
d’acquisition d’images microscopiques (CLSM), on réduit le nombre de paramètres libres
décrivant la PSF et on introduit des contraintes. On introduit aussi des connaissances a
priori sur l’échantillon ce qui permet de stabiliser le processus d’estimation et de favoriser
la convergence. Des expériences sur des données synthétiques montrent que la PSF peut
être estimée avec précision. Des expériences sur des données réelles montrent de bons
resultats de déconvolution en comparaison avec le modèle théorique de la PSF du microscope. |
Abstract :
We propose a method for the iterative restoration of fluorescence Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) images with parametric estimation of the acquisition system’s Point Spread Function (PSF). The CLSM is an optical fluorescence microscope that scans a specimen in 3D and uses a pinhole to reject most of the out-of-focus light. However, the quality of the image suffers from two primary physical limitations. The first is due to the diffraction-limited nature of the optical system and the second is due to the reduced amount of light detected by the photomultiplier tube (PMT). These limitations cause blur and photon counting noise respectively. The images can hence benefit from post-processing restoration methods based on deconvolution. An efficient method for parametric blind image deconvolution involves the simultaneous estimation of the specimen 3D distribution of fluorescent sources and the microscope PSF. By using a model for the microscope image acquisition physical process, we reduce the number of free parameters describing the PSF and introduce constraints. The parameters of the PSF may vary during the course of experimentation, and so they have to be estimated directly from the observation data. We also introduce a priori knowledge of the specimen that permits stabilization of the estimation process and favorizes the convergence. Experiments on simulated data show that the PSF could be estimatedwith a higher degree of accuracy and those done on real data show very good deconvolution results in comparison to the theoretical microscope PSF model. |

Abstract :
We analyze the illumination invariance of the level lines of an image. We show that if the scene surface has Lambertian reflectance and the light is directed, then a necessary condition for the level lines to be illumination invariant is that the 3D scene be developable and that its albedo satisfies some geometrical constraints. We then show that the level lines are ``almost'' invariant for piecewise developable surfaces. Such surfaces fit most of the urban structures. In a second part, this allows us to devise a very fast algorithm that detects changes between pairs of remotely sensed images of urban areas, independently of the lighting conditions. We show the effectiveness of the algorithm both on synthetic OpenGL scenes and real Quickbird images. We compare the efficiency of the proposed algorithm with other classical approaches and show that it is superior both in practice and in theory. |

Résumé :
Ce papier présente de nouveaux algorithmes pour minimiser la variation totale, et plus généralement des normes l^1, sous des contraintes convexes. Ces algorithmes proviennent d'une avancée récente en optimisation convexe proposée par Yurii Nesterov. Suivant la régularité de l'attache aux données, nous résolvons soit un problème primal, soit un problème dual. Premièrement, nous montrons que les schémas standard de premier ordre permettent d'obtenir des solutions de précision epsilon en O(frac1epsilon^2) itérations au pire des cas. Pour une contrainte convexe quelconque, nous proposons un schéma qui permet d'obtenir une solution de précision epsilon en O(frac1epsilon) itérations. Pour une contrainte fortement convexe, nous résolvons un problème dual avec un schéma qui demande O(frac1sqrtepsilon) itérations pour obtenir une solution de précision epsilon. Suivant la contrainte, nous gagnons donc un à deux ordres dans la rapidité de convergence par rapport à des approches standard. Finalement, nous faisons quelques expériences numériques qui confirment les résultats théoriques sur de nombreux problèmes. |
Abstract :
This paper presents new algorithms to minimize total variation and more generally l^1-norms under a general convex constraint. The algorithms are based on a recent advance in convex optimization proposed by Yurii Nesterov citeNESTEROV. Depending on the regularity of the data fidelity term, we solve either a primal problem, either a dual problem. First we show that standard first order schemes allow to get solutions of precision epsilon in O(frac1epsilon^2) iterations at worst. For a general convex constraint, we propose a scheme that allows to obtain a solution of precision epsilon in O(frac1epsilon) iterations. For a strongly convex constraint, we solve a dual problem with a scheme that requires O(frac1sqrtepsilon) iterations to get a solution of precision epsilon. Thus, depending on the regularity of the data term, we gain from one to two orders of magnitude in the convergence rates with respect to standard schemes. Finally we perform some numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical results on various problems. |

Résumé :
La microscopie confocale est une méthode puissante pour l'imagerie 3D de spécimens biologiques. Néanmoins, les images acquises sont dégradées non seulement par du flou dû à la lumière provenant de zones non focalisées du spécimen, mais aussi par un bruit de Poisson dû à la détection. Plusieurs algorithmes de déconvolution ont été proposés pour réduire ces dégradations. Un des plus utilisés est l'algorithme itératif de Richardson-Lucy, qui calcule un maximum de vraisemblance adapté à une statistique poissonienne. Mais cet algorithme tend à amplifier le bruit. Une solution consiste alors à introduire une contrainte de régularisation (par exemple, fondée sur la Variation Totale). Ici, nous nous concentrons sur des méthodes fondées sur l'analyse par ondelettes, en particulier sur des méthodes de débruitage via la transformée en ondelettes, qui semblent être plus appropriées à la microscopie en fluorescence 3D. Nous développons dans ce rapport un algorithme de Transformation en Ondelettes Complexes 3D introduit par N. Kingsbury. Celui-ci permet une décomposition invariante par translation et rotation et une sélectivité directionnelle des coefficients en ondelettes. Nous montrons sur des images synthétiques et sur des images réelles les résultats de cet algorithme de débruitage. Ce dernier est ensuite inséré dans le processus de déconvolution. |
Abstract :
Confocal laser scanning microscopy is a powerful technique for 3D imaging of biological specimens. However the acquired images are degraded by blur from out-of-focus light and Poisson noise. Several deconvolution algorithms have been proposed to reduce these degradations, including the Richardson-Lucy iterative algorithm, which computes a maximum likelihood estimation adapted to Poisson statistics. Nevertheless, this algorithm tends to amplify noise. Other solutions exist which combine Richardson-Lucy algorithm and regularization (for example with a Total Variation constraint). In this report, we will concentrate on methods based on wavelet analysis, in particular on wavelet denoising methods, which turn out to be very effective in application to 3D confocal images. To obtain a translation and rotation invariant decomposition algorithm, we have developped the 3D Complex Wavelet Transform introduced by Nick Kingsbury. These wavelets allow moreover a directional selectivity of the wavelet coefficients. We show on simulated and real images the denoising results. This algorithm is then used for the deconvolution purpose. |

Résumé :
Dans cet article, nous proposons a nouveau modèle mathématique pour détecter dans une image les singularités de codimension supérieure ou égale à deux. Cela signifie que nous voulons détecter des points dans des images 2-D, ou des points et des courbes dans des images 3-D. Nous nous inspirons des modèles de Ginzburg-Landau (GL). Ces derniers se sont révélés efficace pour modéliser de nombreux phénomènes physiques. Nous introduisons le modèle, nous énonçons ses propriétés mathématiques, et nous donnons des résultats expérimentaux illustrant les performances du modèle. |
Abstract :
In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model for detecting in an image singularities of codimension greater than or equal to two. This means we want to detect points in a 2-D image or points and curves in a 3-D image. We drew one's inspiration from Ginzburg-Landau (G-L) models which have proved their efficiency for modeling many phenomena in physics. We introduce the model, state its mathematical properties and give some experimental results demonstrating its capability. |

La microscopie confocale (Confocal laser scanning microscopy ou microscopie confocale à balayage laser) est une méthode puissante de plus en plus populaire pour l'imagerie 3D de spécimens biologiques. Malheureusement, les images acquises sont dégradées non seulement par du flou dû à la lumière provenant de zones du spécimen non focalisées, mais aussi par un bruit de Poisson dû à la détection, qui se fait à faible flux de photons. Plusieurs méthodes de déconvolution ont été proposées pour réduire ces dégradations, avec en particulier l'algorithme itératif de Richardson-Lucy, qui calcule un maximum de vraisemblance adapté à une statistique poissonienne. Mais cet algorithme utilisé comme tel ne converge pas nécessairement vers une solution adaptée, car il tend à amplifier le bruit. Si par contre on l'utilise avec une contrainte de régularisation (connaissance a priori sur l'objet que l'on cherche à restaurer, par exemple), Richardson-Lucy régularisé converge toujours vers une solution adaptée, sans amplification du bruit. Nous proposons ici de combiner l'algorithme de Richardson-Lucy avec une contrainte de régularisation basée sur la Variation Totale, dont l'effet d'adoucissement permet d'éviter les oscillations d'intensité tout en préservant les bords des objets. Nous montrons sur des images synthétiques et sur des images réelles que cette contrainte de régularisation améliore les résultats de la déconvolution à la fois qualitativement et quantitativement. Nous comparons plusieurs méthodes de déconvolution bien connues à la méthode que nous proposons, comme Richardson-Lucy standard (pas de régularisation), Richardson-Lucy régularisé avec Tikhonov-Miller, et un algorithme basé sur la descente de gradients (sous l'hypothèse d'un bruit additif gaussien). |
Abstract :
Confocal laser scanning microscopy is a powerful and increasingly popular technique for 3D imaging of biological specimens. However the acquired images are degraded by blur from out-of-focus light and Poisson noise due to photon-limited detection. Several deconvolution methods have been proposed to reduce these degradations, including the Richardson-Lucy iterative algorithm, which computes a maximum likelihood estimation adapted to Poisson statistics. However this algorithm does not necessarily converge to a suitable solution, as it tends to amplify noise. If it is used with a regularizing constraint (some prior knowledge on the data), Richardson-Lucy regularized with a well-chosen constraint, always converges to a suitable solution. Here, we propose to combine the Richardson-Lucy algorithm with a regularizing constraint based on Total Variation, whose smoothing avoids oscillations while preserving object edges. We show on simulated and real images that this constraint improves the deconvolution results both visually and using quantitative measures. We compare several well-known deconvolution methods to the proposed method, such as standard Richardson-Lucy (no regularization), Richardson-Lucy with Tikhonov-Miller regularization, and an additive gradient-based algorithm. |

Dans ce rapport, nous présentons un nouvel algorithme pour décomposer une imagef en u+v, u étant à variation bornée, et v contenant les textures et le bruit de l'image originale. Nous introduisons une fonctionnelle adaptée à ce problème. Le minimum de cette fonctionnelle correspond à la décomposition cherchée de l'image. Le calcul de ce minimum se fait par minimisation successive par rapport à chacune des variables, chaque minimisati- on étant réalisée à l'aide d'un algorithme de projection. Nous faisons l'étude théorique de notre modèle, et nous présentons des résultats numériques. D'une part, nous montrons comment la composante v peut être utilisée pour faire de la classification d'images texturées, et d'autre part nous montrons comment la composante u peut être utilisée en restauration d'images SAR. |
Abstract :
In this report, we present a new algorithm to split an image f into a component u belonging to BV and a component v made of textures and noise of the initial image. We introduce a functional adapted to this problem. The minimum of this functional corresponds to the image decomposition we want to get. We compute this minimum by minimizing successively our functional with respect to u and v. We carry out the mathematical study of our algorithm. We present some numerical results. On the one hand, we show how the v component can be used to classify textured images, and on the other hand, we show how the u component can be used in SAR image restoration. |

Dans ce rapport, nous présentons un modèle de classification supervisée basé sur une approche variationnelle. Ce modèle s'applique spécifiquement aux images texturées. Nous souhaitons obtenir une partition optimale de l'image constituée de textures séparées par des interfaces régulières. Pour cela, nous représentons les régions définies par les classes ainsi que leurs interfaces par des fonctions d'ensemble de niveaux. Nous définissons une fonctionnelle sur ces ensembles de niveaux dont le minimum est une partition optimale. Cette fonctionnelle comporte en particulier un terme d'attache aux données spécifique aux textures. Nous utilisons une transformée en paquets d'ondelettes pour analyser les textures, ces dernières étant caractérisées par la distribution de leur énergie dans chaque sous-bande de la décompositon. Les équations aux dérivées partielles (EDP) relatives à la minimisation de la fonctionnelle sont couplées et plongées dans un schéma dynamique. En fixant un ensemble de niveaux initial, les différents termes des EDP guident l'évolution des interfaces (ensemble de niveau zéro) vers les frontières de la partion optimale, par le biais de forces externes (régularité de l'interface) et internes (attache aux données et contraintes partition). Nous avons effectué des tests sur des images synthétiques et sur des images réelles. |
Abstract :
In this report, we present a supervised classification model based on a variational approach. This model is specifically devoted to textured images. We want to get an optimal partition of an image which is composed of textures separated by regular interfaces. To reach this goal, we represent the regions defined by the classes as well as their interfaces by level set functions. We define a functional on these level sets whose minimizers define an optimal partition. In particular, this functional owns a data term specific to textures. We use a packet wavelet transform to analyze the textures, these ones being characterized by their energy distribution in each sub-band of the decomposition. The partial differential equations (PDE) related to the minimization of the functional are embeded in a dynamical scheme. Given an initial interface set (zero level set), the different terms of the PDE's govern the motion of interfaces such that, at convergence, we get an optimal partition as defined above. Each interface is guided by external forces (regularity of the interface), and internal ones (data term and partition constraints). We have conducted several experiments on both synthetic and real images. |

Ce rapport contient la justification mathématique du modèle variationnel proposé en traitement d'image pour la classification supervisée. A partir des travaux effectués en mécanique des fluides pour les transitions de phase, nous avons développé un modèle de classification par minimisation d'une suite de fonctionnelles. Le résultat est une image de classes formée de régions homogènes séparées par des contours réguliers. Ce modèle diffère de ceux utilisés en mécanique des fluides car la perturbation utilisée n'est pas quadratique mais correspond à une fonction de régularisation d'image préservant les contours. La gamma-convergence de cette nouvelle suite de fonctionnelles est prouvée. |
Abstract :
The purpose of this report is to show the theoretical soundness of a variation- al method proposed in image processing for supervised classification. Based on works developed for phase transitions in fluid mechanics, the classification is obtained by minimizing a sequence of functionals. The method provides an image composed of homogeneous regions with regular boundaries, a region being defined as a set of pixels belonging to the same class. In this paper, we show the gamma-convergence of the sequence of functionals which differ from the ones proposed in fluid mechanics in the sense that the perturbation term is not quadratic but has a finite asymptote at infinity, corresponding to an edge preserving regularization term in image processing. |

Beaucoup d'alogorithmes de déroulement de phase ont été développés et formulés dans le domaine discret durant ces dix dernières années. Nous proposons ici, une formulation variationnelle pour résoudre le problème. Cette étude dans le domaine continu va nous permettre d'imposer quelques contraintes sur la régularité de la solution et de les implémenter efficacement. Cette méthode est présentée dans le cas unidimensionnel, et servira de base pour nos développement futurs pour le cas réel en 2D. |
Abstract :
Over the past ten years, many phase unwrapping algorithms have been developed and formulated in a discrete setting. Here we propose a variational formulatio- n to solve the problem. This continuous framework will allow us to impose some constraints on the smoothness of the solution and to implement them efficiently. This method is presented in the one dimensional case, and will serve as a basis for future developments in the real 2D case. |

Dans ce rapport, nous proposons deux modèles variationnels pour la classificat- ion d'images multibandes.
Le premier modèle présenté repose sur la minimisation d'une famille de critères dont la suite de solutions converge vers une partition des données composée de classes homogènes séparées par des contours réguliers.
Parallèlement à cette approche, nous avons développé un second modèle de classification mettant en jeu un ensemble de régions et contours actifs. Nous utilisons une approche par ensembles de niveaux pour définir le critère à minimiser. Le critère proposé contient des termes reliés à l'information sur les régions ainsi qu'à l'information sur les contours.
L'imagerie multispectrale permet de prendre en compte, et de combiner, l'information des différentes bandes spectrales renvoyée par un capteur satellitaire ou aérien. L'extension au cas multispectral intervient à des niveaux différents pour les deux modèles proposés dans ce rapport. Nous traitons une application réelle sur une scène SPOT en mode XS pour laquelle nous disposons d'une vérité terrain. Nous comparons les deux modèles variationnels que nous proposons à d'autres approches dont un modèle stochastique hiérarchique, récemment développé à l'IRISA au sein du projet VISTA. |
Abstract :
Herein, we propose two variational models for multiband image classification.
\The first model we propose herein is based on the minimization of a criterion family whose set of solutions is converging to a partition of the data set composed of homogeneous regions with regularized boundaries. The second model we propose is based on a set of active regions and contours. We use a level set formulation to define the criterion we want to minimize. Each class and its associated set of regions and boundaries is defined thanks to a level set function.
The extension of these two models to the multispectral case is presented in this report. The extension of the dynamic model is quite straightforward whereas the one of the first model is more tricky.
We have conducted experiments on SPOT XS data whose ground truth is given. We compare the results we obtain with other approaches, in particular we compare the proposed models to a stochastic hierarchical model recently developed within the VISTA group from IRISA. |

La déconvolution des images satellitaires floues et bruitées est un problème inverse mal posé, qui peut être régularisé dans un cadre bayésien par l'utilisation d'un modèle a priori de la solution reconstruite. Les modèles de régularisation homogènes ne permettent pas d'obtenir des résultats parfaitement satisfaisants, car les images satellitaires ont des propriétés qui varient spatialement. Nous proposons d'utiliser un modèle inhomogène, et nous étudions différentes méthodes permettant d'estimer les paramètres adaptatifs. L'estimateur que nous avons retenu est le maximum de vraisemblance (MV). Nous montrons que cet estimateur, lorsqu'il est calculé à partir de l'image dégradée, est inutilisable pour la déconvolution d'images, car il n'est pas robuste au bruit. Nous montrons ensuite que l'estimation n'est correcte que si elle est effectuée sur l'image originale. Comme cette image est inconnue, nous devons en calculer une approximation, dont la qualité doit être suffisante pour que les résultats de l'estimation soient utiles pour la restauration. Nous détaillons finalement une méthode hybride, permettant d'estimer les paramètres adaptatifs à partir d'une image déconvoluée par un algorithme utilisant des ondelettes, afin de reconstruire l'image. Les résultats obtenus présentent à la fois des bords francs, des textures nettes, et un très bon rapport signal/bruit dans les zones homogènes, dans la mesure où la technique proposée s'adapte localement aux caractéristiques des données. Une comparaison avec des algorithmes concurrents linéaires et non linéaires est aussi effectuée, pour illustrer son efficacité. |
Abstract :
The deconvolution of blurred and noisy satellite images is an ill-posed inverse problem, which can be regularized within a Bayesian context by using an a priori model of the reconstructed solution. Homogeneous regularizat- ion models do not provide sufficiently satisfactory results, since real satellite data show spatially variant characteristics. We propose here to use an inhomogeneous model, and we study different methods to estimate its space-variant parameters. The chosen estimator is the Maximum Likelihood (ML). We show that this estimator, when computed on the corrupted image, is not suitable for image deconvolution, because it is not robust to noise. Then we show that the estimation is correct only if it is made from the original image. Since this image is unknown, we need to compute an approximati- on of sufficiently good quality to provide useful estimation results. Finally we detail an hybrid method used to estimate the space-variant parameters from an image deconvolved by a wavelet-based algorithm, in order to reconstruct the image. The obtained results simultaneously exhibit sharp edges, correctly restored textures and a high SNR in homogeneous areas, since the proposed technique adapts to the local characteristics of the data. A comparison with linear and non-linear concurrent algorithms is also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method. |

Le but de cette étude est l'estimation des paramètres du bruit et de la fonction de flou en imagerie satellitaire. En effet, ces images sont dégradées par le système optique, et par un bruit additif lié au capteur. Les paramètres instrumentaux, connus lors du lancement du satellite, peuvent évoluer au cours du temps. Il est alors nécessaire de pouvoir les estimer à partir des images observées, afin de pouvoir corriger ces images, par déconvolution, dans les meilleures conditions. Le noyau de convolution est paramétré par une fonction traduisant la physique du système imageur étudié. Il s'agit d'estimer les paramètres du noyau, ainsi que la variance du bruit, qui est supposé blanc et gaussien. Pour la déconvolution à paramètre- s fixés, nous utilisons une approche variationnelle, qui consiste à minimiser une fonctionnelle traduisant l'attache aux données et la régularisation de l'image cherchée, interdisant l'amplification du bruit tout en préservant les contours. La méthode proposée repose essentiellement sur deux étapes. Le bruit est estimé en utilisant un filtre passe-bande au moyen d'une transformée en cosinus. Ensuite, l'estimation conjointe du paramètre de régularisation et des paramètres du noyau est effectuée par Maximum de Vraisemblance (MV), en utilisant une méthode de Monte Carlo par Chaînes de Markov (MCMC). Nous présentons également dans ce rapport un état de l'art des méthodes de déconvolution aveugle, ainsi qu'une étude sur l'estimati- on du noyau de convolution lorsqu'il n'est pas paramétré. |
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is the estimation of the parameters of the noise and the blur function in remote sensing. Indeed, satellite images are corrupted by the optical system and by an additive noise due to the sensor. The instrumental parameters, known at the lauch of the satellite, can evolve with time. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate them from the observed images, to enable the deconvolution of these images in the best conditions. The convolution kernel is parametrized by a function which describes the physics of the imaging system. We have to estimate the parameters of the kernel as well as the variance of the noise supposed to be white and Gaussian. For the deconvolution with fixed parameters, we use a variational approach which consists of minimizing a functional involving the data and the regularization of the solution, avoiding the amplification of the noise while preserving edges. The proposed method essentially consists of two steps. The noise is estimated using a bandpass filter using a Cosine transform. Then, the joint estimation of the regularizin- g parameter and the kernel parameters is achieved by computing the Maximum Likelihood (ML), using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We also present in this report the state of the art of blind deconvolution methods and a study of the estimation of the convolution kernel when it is not parametrized. |

Résumé :
La déconvolution des images satellitaires floues et bruitées est un problème inverse mal posé. L'inversion directe entraîne une amplification inacceptable du bruit. Généralement, soit le problème est régularisé lors de l'inversion, soit le bruit est filtré après déconvolution et décomposition dans le domaine de la transformée en ondelettes. Nous avons developpé dans ce rapport la deuxième solution, en seuillant les coefficients d'une nouvelle transformée en paquets d'ondelettes complexes, les fonctions de seuillage étant estimées de manière automatique. L'utilisation de paquets d'ondelettes complexes rend cette méthode invariante par translation, et tient compte des directions, tout en restant d'une complexité O(N). Les résultats obtenus présentent à la fois des textures nettes et un très bon rapport signal/bruit dans les zones homogènes. Par rapport aux algorithmes concurrents, la méthode que nous proposons est plus rapide, invariante par rotation, et tient compte de la directionnalité des détails et des textures de l'image pour mieux les restaurer. Les images déconvoluées de cette manière peuvent être utilisées telles quelles (la restauration peut être intégrée directement dans la chaîne d'acquisition). Mais elles peuvent également constituer le point de départ d'une méthode de régularisation adaptative, permettant d'obtenir des contours plus francs. |
Abstract :
The deconvolution of blurred and noisy satellite images is an ill-posed inverse problem. The direct inversion leads to unacceptable noise amplificatio- n. Usually, either the problem is regularized during the inversion process, or the noise is filtered after deconvolution and decomposition in the wavelet transform domain. Herein, we have developed the second solution, by thresholding the coefficients of a new complex wavelet packet transform; the thresholding functions are automatically estimated. The use of complex wavelet packets enables translation invariance, and takes into account the directions, while remaining of complexity O(N). The obtained results exhibit both correctly restored textures and a high SNR in homogeneous areas. Compared to concurrent algorithms, the proposed method is faster, rotation invariant and takes into account the directions of the details and textures of the image to restore them better. The images deconvolved this way can be used as they are (the restoration step proposed here can be directly inserted in the acquisition chain). But they also can provide a starting point of an adaptive regularization method, enabling one to obtain sharper edges. |

Résumé :
Dans ce rapport, nous présentons un modèle de classification supervisée basé sur une approche variationnelle. Nous souhaitons obtenir une partition optimale de l'image constituée de classes homogènes séparées par des interface- s régulières. Pour cela, nous représentons les régions définies par les classes ainsi que leurs interfaces par des fonctions d'ensembles de niveaux. Nous définissons une fonctionnelle sur ces ensembles de niveaux dont le minimum est une partition optimale. Les Equations aux Dérivées Partielles (EDP) relatives à la minimisation de la fonctionnelle sont couplées et plongées dans une schéma dynamique. En fixant un ensemble de niveaux initial, les différents termes des EDP guident l'évolution des interfaces (ensembles de niveaux zéro) vers les frontières de la partition optimale, par le biais de forces internes (régularité de l'interface) et externes (attache aux données et pas de chevauchement des régions ni de vide dans la partition). Nous avons effectué de nombreux tests sur des images synthétiques ainsi que sur des images réelles. |
Abstract :
This report presents a supervised classification model based on a variational approach. This model is devoted to find an optimal partition compound of homogeneous classes with regular interfaces. We represent the regions of the image defined by the classes and their interfaces by level set functions, and we define a functional whose minimum is an optimal partition. The coupled Partial Differential Equations (PDE) related to the minimization of the functional are considered through a dynamical scheme. Given an initial interface set (zero level set), the different terms of the PDE's are governing the motion of interfaces such that, at convergence, we get an optimal partition as defined above. Each interface is guided by internal forces (regularity of the interface), and external ones (data term, no vacuum, no regions overlapping). We conducted several experiments on both synthetic an real images. |
