The people of Free Phone

      • Sacha Fosse-Parisis is now the main man behind FreePhone. As part of his PhD work, he is developing/evaluating optimal rate/redundancy control mechanisms (a soon-to-be-available paper will describe this) and adding synchronization and 3D rendition features so as to use FreePhone to create 3D audio environments that can be synchronized to other virtual environments. The first application of this is to add 3D FreePhone to MiMaze - this way we get a distributed game with live 3D voice synchronized to the gaming action. Why would anybody want to play Doom in single player mode anymore??

Anyway, read about this work in the paper Adding voice to distributed games on the Internet, which was presented at Infocom'98 in San Fransisco last April.

      • Andrés Vega-García wrote the core code of earlier versions of Free Phone up to 3.1b1, as part of his PhD work. He is now at Microsoft, working on (no surprise here) IP telephony features in NT 5.

      • Jean Bolot supervises the FreePhone effort.
