Title : The Mobile Internet and its challenges
Abstract :
Despite all the publicity and investments made during the last years in deploying a mobile Internet based on cellular phones (Wap, 3G, I-mode), the massification of its use is still a dream. However, it is unclear if the lack of success of Wap is due to technical limitations or to a bad marketing/pricing strategy. In Japan, I-mode has been a success, and all teenagers are wearing a tiny cellphone as a necklace, used mainly to exchange short messages. So, the dream still goes on, and many of us still believe that a completely wireless and mobile access to Internet services will be massively popular in the future. In this talk, we will examine the technical challenges around a completly wireless, mobile and portable Internet. We will survey in particular the devices and their limitations, the network access, the IP versions and the applications, particularly related to multimedia.
