In traditional approaches, resource allocation mechanisms in the wireless physical layer, and quality of service mechanisms at the link layer are designed separately. Recently there has been growing interest in *cross layer* design in wireless networks. We consider various multiple access situations, with different quality of service objectives, and physical layer constraints, and formulate problems of optimal buffer scheduling. For each case, the analysis techniques will be discussed, and structural results will be provided on policies that prescribe the optimal transmission rate and power, for each combination of buffer and channel states.
