On behalf of the directors of the Porquerolles School

Our colleague Dr Maciej Pindor from Poland died on the premises of the Nice Observatory on Saturday July 5th, at about 1 PM. He was visiting JDF to whom he was a friend and a co-worker. Given the way he was found in the forest between the two buildings, it is very likely that while walking from his studio at the "Pavillon Magnétique" to his office at the "CION", he had a cardiac trouble, from which death ultimately resulted. He was 62 years old. A few colleagues were soon on the spot, including the head of the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur and JDF.

Maciej Pindor was "senior lecturer" at the Theoretical Physics Institute of the Warszaw University. He devoted the same care to both his research work and his teaching activities. He was a specialist of complex analysis applied to problems arising from theoretical physics and, more recently, from data analysis. His ways of solving them were both rigorous mathematics and numerical computations ; concerning the latter, he was peerless as to the fine tuning and the reliability of the calculations. He was teaching efficient computational methods to young physicists. Since the beginning of Benedicte Dujardin's (Ph.D. student of JDF) thesis, he participated to her guidance.

The collaboration of JDF and coworkers with M. Pindor dates back to 1996. It has been supported on a regular or specific basis by the Cassini Department, the Warszaw Institute, the polish Academy of Sciences, and OCA, which appointed him as temporary " astronome associé ". He had frequently visited Nice and was known there from many people. M. Pindor was deeply modest. As a result it was easy for everybody to approach him and the contacts with him were very pleasant and useful.

As to the Porquerolles School, he had accepted to contribute in giving three lectures on three different topics. He was motivated by friendship, scientific interest, and his sharp sense of the teaching duty as part of any academic life ; accordingly he had overcomed his anxiety to report on mathematical topics in front of professional mathematicians. Specifically, he was supposed to give the opening lecture, dwelling on the ties between physics and mathematics around the analyticity and resonance concepts. In due time he had sent notes for each of his lectures ; they will part of the lecture outlines booklet. The Porquerolles School will be dedicated to the memory of Maciej Pindor.
