The VVF Villagium where you will be staying is a holiday hotel (VVF means
"Village Vacances Famille") located in the peninsula of Giens, facing the
well known most beautiful islands in the French Riviera: Porquerolles and
Port-Cros (boats to there every hour, every day). It offers a lot of
activities (sea-side or not), most of them free, but some with charge:
scuba diving, catamarans, windsurfer rental, sea canoe hire, mountain bike,
jogging, tennis, etc.
Accommodation
Accommodation is in double room. More precisely, in this case:
each person shares a little flat with another person; One bedroom per
person but the bathroom is shared.
Transportation
By Plane:
Nearest Airport: Toulon/Hyères (small airport about 10 km from Giens).
You can take a taxi from the airport to the VVF at Giens (15 Euros).
Nearest International Airport: Nice Cote d'Azur (all the international
airlines companies land in Nice). Nice is about about 150 kms from Giens.
By Train:
Railway station: Hyères (12 km from Giens).
There are regular trains from Nice to Hyères.
By Bus:
From Nice to Hyères,
there is a bus coast line called "Cars Phocéens" that runs every day
from Monday to Saturday (except Sunday) (about 2.30 hours travel):
From Nice to Hyères: 2 departures/day with two different bus stops:
Downtown in Nice: 2 Place Masséna - 10.30 am and 17.15 pm
From Nice Airport Terminal 1 Pier n° 4 - 10.45 am and 17.30 pm.
From Hyères to Nice: 2 departures/day (except Sunday) from the
coach station to Nice airport Terminal 1 and Nice downtown:
7.10 am and 14.00 pm.
Fare for the "Cars Phoceens" bus is 22 E (single ticket)
From Hyères to Giens (12 Km), there are regular buses either
from the railway station or the coach station: line 67. Approximately
every hour from 6.30 in the morning to 19.20 either from the railway
station or from the coach station (Monday to Saturday) and from 6.30
to 18.30 on Sunday. Please ask for the timetable at one or the other
starting point. Bus stop is VVF Giens.
by Car:
All major car rental companies are represented at the two airports.
From Nice, take the direction "Marseille", then "Toulon", then either
"presqu'ile de Giens" or "les iles Porqueroles". The VVF is located at
the tip of the peninsula.
Apr. 2h15 from Nice, 1h45 from Inria-Sophia.
Types summer school special transportation
The School will organize ONE shuttle from NICE Côte d'Azur
Airport. The bus driver will wait for the participants at the
International Arrival Terminal 1, at the AVIS (rental cars)
desk. He will hold a sign "TYPES SUMMER SCOOL".
Shuttle to VVF Giens:
Sunday, September 1st 2002, 5:00pm (2.30 hours travel).
Please be aware that there will be no other shuttle to GIENS, so
make sure that your flight arrive earlier this day if you plan to use
it. Same shuttle will be organized at the end of the school.
Shuttle to Nice Airport:
Saturday, September 14, 2002, 9:00am (2.30 hours travel).
If you plan to use the shuttle, please fill in the item on the
registration form.
Tour
The School will invite the students to a trip to the Porquerolles island -
15 minutes by boat from the Giens peninsula.
You will be able to discover
ancien forts, a large variety of Mediterraneen plants, many creeks and
bays. The village itself is delightful dominated by a Mexican style church
surrounded by giant eucalyptus trees.
Other nearest cities with exceptionnal scenery and landscapes to discover:
St Tropez, St raphael, Bormes-les-Mimosas.
Weather
Open to the sea, Giens and the French Riviera in general are still
warm and sunny during September - Average temperature: 22 degrees
celsius. Rains are very rare.
