IP routing and QoS in satellite constellations

Abstract:

There are a large number of stated reasons why IP routing cannot be easily performed onboard the satellites in a low-earth-orbiting satellite constellation. These reasons include problems with maintaining large, frequently updated routing tables. However, there are also compelling reasons why IP routing over satellite is desirable, including support for IP multicast and nascent IP QoS (quality of service), as well as the overheads of tunnelling and a desire for simplicity. An approach to performing IP routing onboard the satellites, using network address translation, and its benefits and drawbacks compared to other routing strategies, will be presented.
