ARC-TCP

Project Resume

Today there is no doubt that the Internet has become a part of everyday life for many people in the world. The recent success of the Internet in comparison to other data networks, such as Frame Relay and ATM, can be explained by the simple and robust structures of the basic Internet Protocol (IP). The currently most popular Internet applications, Web and peer-to-peer, are based on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Currently, between 80% and 90% of Internet traffic is generated by TCP. The modeling and design of TCP/IP networks is, therefore, an important research topic in the Networking and Applied Probability scientific communities.

The main aim of this ARC project is to reinforce existing collaborations, and to trigger new ones between researchers working on TCP/IP modelling in INRIA, EPFL and France Telecom R&D.

Main research directions

  • Asymptotics for AIMD and Multi-AIMD models.
  • Modelling HTTP initiated traffic.
  • Active Queue Management (AQM) and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN).
  • Modeling TCP/IP backbone traffic.
  • Differentiated Services for the Internet.
  • Audio and Video over IP.
  • Control of Multicast flows.

Participating teams

  • Mistral, Planete (INRIA Sophia Antipolis).
  • Trec (ENS/INRIA Rocquencourt), Hipercom, Rap (INRIA Rocquencourt).
  • Armor (IRISA).
  • Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL).
  • France Telecom R&D (Issy Les Moulineaux, Lannion, Sophia Antipolis).
