External partners are nvolved in the project to participate to the activities corresponding to Level 3 contributions. The participation of the partner is linked to a practical application. In that case, the partner
contribute to:
- The definition of the selected scientific and engineering use cases considered in the project,
- The definition of target, frontier, numerical simulations for the use cases,
- The setup of input data and geometrical models (i.e. computational meshes),
- The validation of the results through comparisons with available data obtained in other contexts.
- ANDRA
ANDRA is the French National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management and is in charge of long-term management of all radioactive waste, under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea (formerly the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Environment), and the Ministry of Research. Andra is involved in (i) a R&D mission, in order to propose long-term safety solutions for all kinds of radioactive wastes, including long-term storage, in particular studies about the deep geological repository project for high/intermediate level long lived wastes; (ii) an industrial mission concerning, on one hand, waste acceptance criteria and control and, on the other hand, sitting, construction, operation, closure and monitoring of repositories; (iii) an information mission, through the regular publication of the national inventory of radioactive materials and waste. This mission includes as well an active policy of dialogue with stakeholders both at national and local level.
The Performance Assessment Department from Research and Development Division is involved in the project. The department is responsible of the phenomenological description and performance/safety assessment of the integrated disposal repositories and their geological environments. It provides phenomenological and conceptual description of the behavior of each repository and geological component during operating and post-closure periods, in space and time (thermal, chemical, mechanical, hydraulicgas, radionuclide/toxic release and transfer), including uncertainties analysis. The objective is to achieve] a relevant, traceable and justified data base on multiphysic understanding at all space and time scales, in order (i) to develop safety assessment of repositories, (ii) to contribute to choices of design concept, (iii) to contribute to monitor the repositories and their environments, and (iv) to contribute to define step by step operating of the repositories. To assess the objective, the department and its subcontractors set up and perform many numerical simulations, involving efficient and robust methods and tools, and sound link with characterization data. The department also supports definition, development, choice and implementation of relevant simulation tools for all Agency activities.
- CEA (Cadarache center)
CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) is active in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. In each of these fields, the CEA maintains a cross-disciplinary culture of engineers and researchers, building on the synergies between fundamental and technological research.
IRFM (Research Institute on Magnetic Fusion) develops a set of ab-initio codes dedicated to magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) stability, turbulent transport, plasma-wall interaction, and RF heating. This effort is crucial to develop the expertise and skills in hot plasma physics as well as in applied mathematics and computer science that are mandatory to reach international recognition and play a role in the physics of ITER when operating. Two non-linear MHD codes are used. The first one, XTOR, is mainly dedicated to core resistive MHD modes in connection with the scientific programme of Tore Supra dedicated to long pulses, and of JET for Neoclassical Tearing Modes (NTM). It is currently being coupled to a particle code at CPhT (Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France) in order to study kinetic MHD instabilities. The second code, JOREK, is rather dedicated to edge localized modes and disruptions. Regarding transport, a full-F global gyrokinetic code, GYSELA, is being developed. It can now operate with realistic geometry and soon with several species. In addition, fluid codes are being developed to compute core turbulence over times longer than the confinement times, and also to model edge turbulence in both the scrape-off layer and pedestal regions. Finally, 3 codes are being used for RF heating. The EVE code is able to compute the propagation of RF waves in the IC frequency range. LUKE is a Fokker-Planck code that computes the distribution of fast electrons produced by LHCD and ECRH. It is currently extended to compute the distribution of fast ions. Finally MIKE is presently written in order to investigate the linear stability of MHD modes driven by fast particles.
