The municipality of Valbonne Sophia Antipolis is located in the Alpes Maritimes county, in the middle of a big plateau, and surrounded by the municipalities of Grasse, Cannes and Antibes. It brings together two geographic areas:
- the old village of Valbonne, with its 12th century "chalaisienne" Abbey, its 17th century "Place des Arcades", its orthogonal lay-out, largely inspired by roman cities.
- the major part of the Sophia Antipolis technology Center, created by the senator Pierre Laffitte in 1969, presently being the largest european scientific part, with more 1000 companies and par 15 000 jobs, mainly in the electronic, chemical and medical fields.
