Distributed Agency: Is there Any Other Kind?
THE GROWTH OF THE INTERNET has brought with it a renewed interest in the
idea of artificial "agents," "knowbots," and other computational artifacts
attributed with a capacity for intelligent, interactive behavior.
In Plans and Situated Actions: The problem of human-machine communication
(1987) L. Suchman proposed that the term "interaction" might best be
reserved to describe what goes on between persons, rather than extended
to encompass relations between people and machines. In her talk L. Suchman
will re-examine that argument and its implications for notions
of agency in light of recent debates within social studies of technology.
These discussions develop the proposition that agency is locateable neither
in humans nor in machines, but only in relations between them. L. Suchman
will close by tracing out some implications of this view
for how we think about the organization of cooperative human activity
and the design of associated artifacts.
LUCY SUCHMAN received a Ph.D. in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1984. Since 1979 she has been
a researcher at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, where she is currently
a Principal Scientist and heads the Work Practice and Technology
area. Her research concerns the relation of everyday working practices
to computer systems design. Her dissertation Plans and Situated Actions:
the problem of human-machine communication was published by Cambridge
University Press in 1987. It provides a critical analysis of
models of human action and communication that underlie the design
of interactive machines, and proposes an alternative perspective drawn
from recent developments in the social sciences. Lucy Suchman was programme
chair of the Second Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work,
CSCW '88, and has been an active member of the CSCW and ECSCW research
communities.
